FB20 - Civil War Cap Box

This percussion cap box was made by "S. H. Young Co / Newark" which is clearly stamped on the inside flap, as is an excellent inspector's stamp "R White/US/Ord Dept/Subinspector" in an oval on the outside flap. Young had an 1865 contract for 10,000 infantry items marked with his name including cap boxes and leather slings. The base has a brass rivet and the reverse has sewn and riveted belt loops. The leather is pliable and remarkably free of flaking except for some wear on the sides and ears. The interior retains none of the original wool, but it does have an old vent pick. An extremely fine box.
