FC7 - Belt With Snake Buckle

538.50
This is a very old leather belt, once tanned to blacken it, but through lots of wear, most of the black has worn off leaving a more original, leather hide appearance. The buckle is one that was commonly referred to as a snake buckle because the horizontal clasp was wrought in the form of a two-headed reptile. Through the years many have been recovered from both U.S. and C.S. campsites. This one is non-dug and and very fine, aged condition. The horizontal piece measures 1_ across and just over _ wide. The outside loops are just under 2"'. It is nearly identical toplate #913 in O'Donnell & Campbell.
