N569 - CSA $100 Note

267.50
Issued 3 November 1862 (handwritten) in Richmond, VA, this is a T-41 note with serial # 40,xxx and plate letter Y. The central vignette is slaves hoeing cotton with John C. Calhoun at left (a states' rights advocate and pro-slavery Senator from South Carolina who served as Vice President of the United States under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson). Columbia is to the right. This is the variation with the horizontal scroll in the upper corner. It is printed in black ink on plain paper with HUNDRED overprinted in red/orange. Two things that make this note stand out are a CSA script watermark and the fact that instead of the customary Interest Paid stamp, it retains a handwritten notation, Interest Paid to Jan 1st 1865" in black ink. The only flaw is an old imprint of a paper clip at the lower left. A most desirable note.
