N589 Alabama $1 Note

47.50

(CR-1)This note has a portrait of Governor Shorter to the left, the state capitol at center and a map and tree lower right. It is printed in black ink on white paper with ONE in green. It is interesting to note that this series (1863) consisted primarily of fractional notes which were intended to replace the US coins that had disappeared from circulation at the beginning of the war. Rising inflation caused the need for currency in higher denominations which led to the issue of 1 January 1864 which contained nothing lower than a $5 bill. This is a 1st series note, serial #5,8xx, plate letter “H.”  The bill is in overall very good condition with a few pin holes visible when held to the light.
