N594 - Bank of Tennessee $1 Note

37.50
Because of the split in Tennessee sympathies between loyalty to the North and to th South and the fact that Union forces occupied large portions of Tennessee almost from the war's inception, it is not known whether much, if any, of the state's authorized currency was ever issued. The government and the citizens relied heavily on local scrip, various bank notes and Federal greenbacks throughout the war years (Cuhaj 234). This well-used $1 note was issued on the Bank of Tennessee in Nashville 1 December 1861. A central vignette shows barrels, sheaves and a plow with a steamboat sailing behind on the river. Printed in black ink on plain paper, this bill is in only fair condition, but representative as Tennessee currency is so hard to come by today.
