An American stage actress, Cushman was noted for the richness and range of her voice which allowed her to play the parts of both men and women. She began her career in opera, but after suffering serious vocal strain, devoted herself to dramatic acting and in later life to stage readings, most notably from Shakespearean works. During the Civil War she returned to New York from Europe and gave several performances to benefit the Sanitary Commission. Her lifestyle was considered rather bohemian and risque for the day. This is a full, standing view, a rather dramatic pose of a well noted individual. The image was published by G. Appleton & Co in Boston
