April 1, 1864. This is a large (19 ½ x 25") four-page paper published in Taunton, Mass. Newsworthy items include: Neal Dow’s speech following his release from rebel prison in Richmond; Lincoln’s proclamation regarding Amnesty; Grant’s opinion of McClellan - “he rose too rapidly, was intoxicated with his elevation and afraid to take a bold step!”; correspondence from the 39th NY at Mitchell’s Station, VA; Gen Forest raids Paducah, KY - captures and burns the town; Grant reorganizing the Army of the Potomac; Negro soldiers at Paducah fight gallantly against the rebels; news from Florida and LA. Great ads including many cure-alls. Most entertaining! In overall very good condition with some fraying at folds.
