July 20, 1861. The front page shows men and women in the war effort – filling cartridges at the US arsenal at Waterstown, MA. Inside, full-page sketches include: the 11th Indiana Regiment - Colonel Lew Wallace’s Zouaves portrayed in five scenes; scenes about camp - 8 sketches; the Pirates; a balloon view of the seat of war (most interesting). The double page, central sketch shows the Navy Yard at Brooklyn, NY in great detail. Smaller sketches include: McMullin’s Rangers at Hagerstown, MD; Major Knipe winging a secessionist; locomotive and tender thrown from the railway bridge at Harper’s Ferry; the Harper’s Ferry armory; reading the war bulletins in Broadway, NY; the secessionist army – irregular riflemen of the Alleghanies in VA; Major-General Patterson; the military occupation of Monument Square in Baltimore. Stories accompany all illustrations. The paper is complete (16 pages) and contains a good number period advertisement and six great     political cartoons
