September 7, 1861. Designed as A Journal of Practical Information in Art, Science, Mechanics, Agriculture, Chemistry and Manufactures, this 16-page paper contains a wealth of interesting reading. The front page story (with illustration) is of Fisher's Railroad Sleeping Car, the first of its kind in design with berths selling for 50 per night! Other stories of interest concern the process of making steel, making and selling papier mache, manufacturing rifled cannons, useful information about patents and patent laws, the design of an improved machine for boring bars of wood or metal, a list of recent American inventions. In addition, there are stories covering news of the war and one short article on the health of our soldiers. The paper is in very good condition.
