C261 - Freed Slaves Legal Affidavit

This is a most interesting document, completely handwritten and measuring 7_" x 12_". It concerns a felony indictment brought against "Mary Reid, Freedwoman and Charles Harris, Freedman" who are about to be remanded to jail for failing to put up bond and security against their court appearance. It is interesting because of the slave content. It was signed and dated "19 October 1866" by William G. Lanterman as Principle and George W. Haas as Security as well as P. Fair, Justice of the Peace in Baldwin County, Georgia. It is written in a rather ornate hand and is in excellent condition.
