– War Dated  This is an incredibly handsome 16" x 12" document detailing the account of Dr. B. Bowling with J. J. Polk for the years 1861, 1862 and 1863 in New Castle, Hardeman County, Tennessee and dated 1 January 1864. On the left side of the ledger (hand drawin in red ink on white paper and penned in black and red ink) is the list of monies owed to Polk for such items as "shoes for Mary, calico, undershirts, pipes, toothbrushes etc." On the right is a list of the proceeds netted from Negro hire, the one ledger ultimately offsetting the other. The document has been prepared in a meticulous hand. It separated at the center fold, but I have repaired it with correct, invisible, archival tape, so the document must be described as in near excellent condition. It would be a wonderful piece framed. Slave documents with war dates are extremely scarce.
