H79 - M1840 Nco Sword

This is the popular and highly collectible sword manufactured for the non-commissioned officer and designed as a fighting sword. This one was manufactured by Ames and marked Made by / Ames Mfg Co / Chicopee inside a scroll on the reverse. The obverse is stamped US/ JH (James Hannis, U.S. sub-Inspector of Arms from 1844 -1959) / 1864. The inspector's initials are also clearly stamped on the knuckle bow. The blade is the standard 32" straight blade and is in exceptional condition - clean and bright. The brass hilt and knuckle bow are evenly aged. The leather scabbard is very fine, a little weak about 3" above the drag, but this is not at all uncommon. In fact, it is pretty usual to see this section repaired. The drag retains the initials JCW. This must be described as an extremely desirable, American-made specimen.
