April 12, 1862. The front page features Major General Bissell and Brigadier-General Shields (both drawn from Brady photographs) and the bomb-proof battery at Newbern, NC taken by General Burnside’s troops. Inside sketches include: views at New Madrid and Point Pleasant (full page); a full page drawing of the Burnside expedition; a map of the seat of war in Tennessee and Mississippi showing Union and rebel army positions; the rebel steamer Virginia, better known as the Merrimac; the interior of the Monitor (a full page sketch); the Hampton Roads battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac. The double page drawing depicts the Battle of Winchester showing the decisive charge upon the rebels at the Stone Wall - a most impressive Waud sketch. The paper is complete (16 pages) with stories accompanying all illustrations. There are three political cartoons and wonderful period advertisements, several with illustrations. There is some discoloration from age, but the overall condition is very good.
