C195 - Csa Tax-In-Kind Document

$147.50
Pre-printed on this document is the statement: "Estimate and Assessment of Agricultural Products which are taxed in kind, agreed upon by the Assessor and Tax Payer, and the value of the portion thereof to which the Government is entitled, in accordance with the provisions of An Act to lay taxes for the common defence, and carry on the Government of the Confederate States_." H. R. Franklin of Campbell County, VA lists 70 bushels of wheat, 11,220 lbs of oats, 15,000 lbs of cured hay and 40 lots of wool, all of good quality and all with a total value of $213.00. Under oath, Franklin swore that these were products grown by him during 1864. The document was executed 18 October 1864 and is signed by Franklin and C. A. Holcombe, Assessor for the 24th Tax District of Virginia. On the reverse is a list of special exemptions assigning a monetary value to heads of households, soldiers wounded and discharged, widows etc. Most interesting! The document is pre-printed on coarse brown paper and measures 9_" x 11_"; it is in very fine condition.
