This is the model 1851, brass, pompom Eagle worn on the side of the enlisted man's black slouch hat, designed to hold up the brim on the side. The handsome design consists of a spread eagle with up-raised wings and a Union shield on its breast. It measures 2_" x 1_" and is in excellent, bright condition. Both back hooks are intact.
