D246 - C.W. Pocket Chess Set

$197.50
This fragile & unique game set was obviously well-used. We know how popular games like chess & checkers were during the War, so it is no wonder that someone came up with the ingenious idea of retailing a portable game. The board is made to fold like a wallet. Closed it measures 3 1/2". It is made of cardstock covered with well-worn leatherette, embossed Crane?s Pocket Game Board. Open it measures @ 71/4" x 6"; the board is made of heavy folded paper with inserts for the tiny cardboard pieces (each @ 1") which are imprinted with the image of their designation: crown, horse, castle, pawn etc. Twenty one pieces remain. Inside the board is a period newspaper clipping outlining "Problem No 1,791" showing the "end game" of a match in which the White team announced check-mate against the Black in eight moves. The game and clipping are encased in an attractive 12" x 8" glass faced Riker case for both protection and display.
